Many parents feel alarmed when their newborn suddenly develops small red or white spots on the face. Don’t worry: in most cases this is baby acne, also called neonatal acne.
Baby acne: what exactly is it?
These are small bumps or pimples appearing mainly on the cheeks, forehead, nose or chin, sometimes on the chest. Baby acne is very common, not contagious, and it has nothing to do with poor hygiene or allergies.
What causes baby acne?
We don’t know the exact cause, but it is likely connected to maternal hormones that remain in the baby’s body after birth. These hormones stimulate the baby’s sebaceous (oil) glands, which may temporarily cause small pimples.
What can you do about baby acne?
The most important thing: baby acne resolves on its own within several weeks to months. Usually you don’t need to take major action. However, you can support the skin with these gentle tips:
- Gently cleanse: Clean the baby’s face once a day with lukewarm water or a mild, organic baby cleanser. Gently pat the skin dry. Our Oh, Baby! products contain pre- and probiotics that help support the natural skin barrier.
- Avoid squeezing or scratching: That may irritate the skin or lead to infection.
- Avoid heavy creams or oils: These may clog the pores. Dress the baby in breathable layers. This helps the skin stay comfortable and balanced.
When should you consult a doctor or health nurse?
In most cases baby acne is harmless. But contact your doctor or the child health clinic if:
- The spots become inflamed (red, painful or pus-filled).
- Your baby seems uncomfortable or has fever.
- The acne has not resolved after a few months.
- Gentle care with respect for the skin
At Oh, Baby! we believe in mild, organic baby skincare that respects and supports the natural balance of baby’s skin. Our formulas with pre- and probiotics help maintain a healthy skin microbiome — even when a little baby acne is present.
