Microplastics are tiny plastic particles that can be found in skincare. They don’t break down and may harm both the environment and your baby’s delicate skin. Learn how to avoid them with Oh, Baby!’s microplastic-free, organic care.

What are microplastics?

Microplastics are tiny plastic fragments, usually smaller than 5 millimetres. They’re often added to skincare to improve texture, give a smooth feel or help products stick better to the skin.

There are two types:

  • Primary microplastics: intentionally added to cosmetics such as scrubs or creams.
  • Secondary microplastics: created when larger plastic items like packaging or fabrics break down.

Though small, these particles have a big environmental impact — and may also affect our health.

Why are microplastics a problem?

  1. Harmful to the environment. Microplastics don’t disappear. They wash down our drains, reach rivers and oceans, and are eaten by marine life — eventually returning to our food chain.
  2. Not ideal for the skin. Microplastics can build up on the skin and disturb its natural barrier. For babies and children, whose skin is thinner and more sensitive, that’s something to avoid.
  3. Completely unnecessary in skincare. Natural ingredients like plant oils, beeswax or shea butter can achieve the same results — gently and safely.

How to spot microplastics in skincare?

They often hide behind complex ingredient names such as:

  • Polyethylene (PE)
  • Polypropylene (PP)
  • Polyethylene terephthalate (PET)
  • Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)
  • Acrylates Copolymer / Acrylates Crosspolymer

Tip: use the Beat the Microbead app to check whether your skincare contains microplastics.

Microplastics and packaging — should you worry?

Some plastics can release micro-particles as they degrade.
That’s why at Oh, Baby! we use stable, safe material that does not release microplastics such as biobased HDPE packaging made from sugarcane .

We avoid cheap plastics that degrade under heat or sunlight, keeping our products safe from start to finish.
